HMB45 is a useful melanoma marker used in the evaluation of tumors of unknown origin as well as sentinel lymph nodes to rule out melanoma metastasis. In the skin, invasive melanomas show at least focal HMB45 staining, whereas nevi are negative in the deep dermis. HMB45 also stains perivascular epithelial cell tumors (angiomyolipoma, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, PEComa, clear cell ”sugar” tumor.
